The new U.S. administration’s interest in purchasing the mineral-rich Danish island, which is home to a sizable U.S. military station, has been heightened by the arrival of Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President-elect Donald Trump, in Greenland on Tuesday for a private visit.
According to Danish state television, Trump Jr.’s aircraft touched down in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk. Local media in the Arctic enclave, which has a population of about 57,000, showed footage of Trump Jr. traversing a snow-covered tarmac.
The government of Greenland stated in an official statement that Trump Jr. was not on an official assignment and was only there “as a private individual.” As a result, no Greenlandic delegates were scheduled to meet with him. Greenland is still a separate part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
A source acquainted with Trump Jr.’s plans claims that the main purpose of his travel was to create video footage for podcasts. Greenlandic spokeswoman Kleist acknowledged that neither his delegation nor the Greenlandic government asked for official meetings.
The visit had political implications even though it was a personal trip. The Arctic is a region of great strategic importance for the United States, China, Russia, and other countries, according to President-elect Donald Trump, who has frequently indicated interest in acquiring Greenland.
Located between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, Greenland is the largest island in the world. An ice sheet covers 80% of its area.
Trump said on social media Monday evening:
“I’ve heard that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA.’ Don Jr., my son, and a number of other delegates will be going there to see some of the most amazing places and landmarks. If and when Greenland joins our country, the people will greatly profit from this amazing place. We shall adore it and keep it safe from the harsh outside world. RESTORE GREATNESS TO GREENLAND.”
Múte Egede, the prime minister of Greenland, has often demanded the country’s independence from Denmark. Egede emphasized in a recent New Year’s speech that Greenland would be able to move past its colonial past if it gained its independence. He has, however, also made it clear that Greenland is not for sale and has no desire to join the U.S.
Egede’s position was echoed by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who emphasized that the people of Greenland will determine the island’s future. According to Frederiksen, Denmark’s most significant ally is the United States.
Danish sovereignty over the Faroe Islands and Greenland has been reaffirmed. Greenland and Faroe Island symbols were added to Denmark’s royal coat of arms by King Frederik X last month. A silver bear with a crimson tongue represents Greenland.
Since 1194, the coat of arms has represented the legitimacy and sovereignty of Denmark and its ruler, according to the royal declaration. King Frederik declared in his New Year’s speech:
“We are all united and each of us committed for the Kingdom of Denmark, all the way to Greenland.”
President-elect Trump openly considered buying Greenland, which obtained home autonomy from Denmark in 1979, during his first administration. After Denmark’s prime minister rejected the idea of selling Greenland, Trump postponed a planned trip there in August 2019. Trump recently brought up the subject again in a statement, stating:
“The United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity for purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world.”
Serving on the presidential transition team and helping to choose candidates for important positions in the future White House administration, Donald Trump Jr. has emerged as a prominent figure in his father’s political movement.
